Essay on why college athletes should get paid
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. They play because they enjoy the game, not because it is their job. Most people that disagree with the idea of paying the athletes fail to realize what really goes on behind the scenes. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.
Because college athletes are forced to spend the majority of their time towards their sports, these athletes miss out on opportunities to have jobs or even do school work. The amount of time that these student athletes dedicate to their respective sports is basically equivalent to having a full-time job. According to a study performed by the NCAA in 2017, Division 1 athletes spend, on average, 35 hours per week towards their sport during the season (Drozdowski). After accounting for all of the games and practices each week, these athletes are left with almost no time to study or even have a job. Since the NCAA refuses to allow its athletes to receive any type of payment, some athletes, who don’t receive full scholarships, have no way to pay for daily essentials. All things considered, the NCAA has received some competition from the up-and-coming G-League, an affiliation of the NBA (National Basketball Association), which chooses to pay its star basketball players right out of high school. The G-League offers star prospects up to $500,000 in wages, incentives, and sponsorship opportunities, while also offering a full college scholarship as well (McCann). Opportunities such as the G-League could leave the NCAA with no choice but to pay these athletes for their contributions.
People also have some pretty strong opinions about why college athletes shouldn't be paid. These arguments can make for a pretty compelling essay, too!

A lotof people argue that athletes receiving full ride scholarships or grants for athletics should not bepaid, they are already getting a huge compensation. A big argument against college athletesgetting paid is that if it happens for college then so should high school athletes, after all they putit in a lot of effort as well right( Salvadore 2)? In adition to the high school argument anothercommon defense is what teams get paid. If the football team gets paid, the tennis team and thevolleyball team have to be paid too, They're athletes also. Then What about the golf players? They're all there on athletic scholarship. How about the chess team? And who could forget aboutthe rowing team? And dance team/ cheer squad? (salvadore 3) Paying one team would end upbringing out an argument as to why every team/ group should be paid if they are involved oncampus and who would pay for all of this? Colleges do not have enough money, but it wouldalso defeat the purpose of going to school. If athletes were to start getting paid, it would givepeople a reason to talk about paying other students in the school. “If we pay the athletes maybe
Tyson Hartnett of The Huffington Post once said “Even with any type of scholarship, college athletes are typically dead broke.” This quote is regarding a tremendous controversy that has been talked about for the past few years. He talks about whether or not college athletes should be paid for their duties. Despite the fact that college athletes are not professionals, they should most certainly be paid to play for their respective schools due to many factors. These factors include health risks and the income they bring in for their colleges as well as to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
College athletes attend post-secondary schools in order to receive an education and to participate in sports. “Student athletes participate in an organized competitive sport sponsored by the educational institution in which he or she is enrolled. Student athletes must typically balance the roles of being a full-time student and a full-time athlete” (“Student athlete” 1). Additionally, some people believe athletes should receive a salary. However, paying college athletes hurts the school, the sports, and the athletes.
When it comes to college athletics, the popularity among college sports teams has grown tremendously over the years. In fact, this growth in popularity has led directly to the substantial increase of revenue that is produced from college athletics. According to Drozdowski, “college athletic programs collected $14 billion in total revenue in 2019, up from $4 billion in 2003.” With that being said, this overall spike in generated revenue has introduced the debate over whether or not these college athletes should receive some of this money that they are responsible for producing. Ever since the beginning of college sports, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has deemed all college athletes ineligible to receive any form of money besides scholarships provided by their respective university. However, there has been a great deal of recent discussion among government officials and sports analysts regarding this issue and whether or not there should be changes made to the way the NCAA handles paying, or not paying, its athletes. Although some people argue that paying college athletes would ruin college athletics, recently proposed bills and studies show that college athletes ultimately deserve to be paid.

why college athletes should be paid
Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
