How long should a paragraph be, really? – Microsoft 365
As mentioned, the length of a paragraph really depends on the content and should be driven by an idea rather than a wordcount. However, knowing the common guidelines that educators prescribe can provide helpful context when you’re outlining your own paragraphs. Teachers of middle school and high school students typically ask for paragraphs with three to five sentences. In magazines and newspapers, on the other hand, journalists may write paragraphs as short as one or two sentences, which helps readers digest information quickly. In academic writing at the university level, paragraphs commonly follow a structure that prioritizes developing and supporting arguments and include six to eight sentences. such as novelists and essayists may use a combination of shorter and longer paragraphs, depending on how they want to communicate their ideas and affect.
In other words, paragraphs are not just clusters of sentences, but instead ideas. The length of the paragraph, therefore, represents how much you develop the idea in the paragraph, and the division of paragraphs should be dictated not by some arbitrary word limit (100-200 words is what I learned in high school), but instead by the clear, logical division of ideas.
If you are having a problem where your paragraphs are too short, you may not be adequately developing the ideas in each of those paragraphs. If they are too long, on the other hand, it's a sign that you're overdeveloping your ideas to the point of monotony, and might be getting too abstract and verbose.

You will also have to learn to bulk up the content of each paragraph. I dislike giving rules or formulas to students when it comes to collegewriting because nearly every rule or formula has both weaknesses and exceptions. But a general guideline for the paragraphs in your college essays is thatthey should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of a page. Any longer, and chancesare good that you have more than one main idea. In which case, youneed to find the other secondary main ideas and give them their own paragraphs.
My personal rule of thumb is that if a paragraph reaches 100 words, I should think about either trimming it down or breaking it into two, lest I end up with a wall of text. That's just a guideline, though, not something I rigidly obey. Aside from that, I don't think there are any hard-and-fast rules about paragraph length. A paragraph should be as long or as short as it needs to be, whether that's two sentences or six.
However, students are more concerned when they cant get their paragraphsto be even a third of a page long. They usually think this is becausethey simply have nothing more to say, which in argumentative writing isnot usually the case. Usually the inability to get paragraphs tobe long enough is the result of writing paragraphs that are missing keycomponents.
The best example I can think of is the opening paragraph of the climactic chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It's only one sentence and three words long, but it says everything that needs to be said:

However, in longer documents it is a good idea to mix things up a bit, especially if you have a lot of long paragraphs. One way to do this is to bookend each section with short introductory and concluding paragraphs, setting out and then summarizing what you’ve discussed.
How many paragraphs should a college essay be
A paragraph is a unit comprised of one or more sentences that all center around a common idea. A paragraph can be a single word, or it can go on for as long as a writer wants to keep writing. In essays or books, multiple paragraphs function as sections or units that make up the piece as a whole. The generally agreed-upon structure for a good paragraph is that it starts with a topic sentence, which is followed by a few supporting sentences, and ends with a conclusion or transition sentence. A strong paragraph focuses on a single idea or thought—when you’re ready to move on to a new topic or theme, it’s time to start a new paragraph.
How Long Should a College Essay Be: Simple Explanation
Too many short paragraphs can make a text feel jumpy and disconnected. If you’ve read through the tips above and realized that some of your paragraphs are too short, there are a few ways to lengthen them. First, go through your text and see if there are any paragraphs that cover similar ideas and can be combined into one longer paragraph. Once these paragraphs have been identified, simply delete the line break to combine the two paragraphs. However, if the short paragraphs covering the same idea are sprinkled throughout the text, you might need to make some structural changes. Think about how you can move around these sections to create a more cohesive overall argument or structure before combining them into a single section.

So, how many paragraphs are enough, and how many are too many? For historical writing, there should be between four and six paragraphs in a two-page paper, or six and twelve in a five-page essay.* More than that, and it becomes difficult to see the larger contours of your argument. Fewer, and it's hard to see where sections start and end. A good general rule is two to three paragraphs a page.
How Many Sentences Should a Paragraph Really Have
While too-short paragraphs can break up an idea and make a text feel disjointed, paragraphs that are too lengthy risk losing a reader’s attention. The simplest way to identify potential places to shorten a long paragraph is by reading through your text and keeping an eye out for places where the idea shifts, or a new theme is introduced. Places where the focus of a section changes are opportunities to add a line break and create new paragraphs. When breaking up long paragraphs into short ones, you may need to add transitional or linking sentences to maintain the flow of your piece. Ultimately, doing so can improve the overall tone and effectiveness of your writing and help develop your relationship with your reader.
